2011 Bodegas Vizcarra Ramos “JC” Tempranillo, Ribera del Duero, Spain
The 2011 Bodegas Vizcarra Ramos “JC” is a rich and earthy wine made from the Tempranillo grape. The initials “JC” stand for Juan Carlos, which happens to be the proprietor and winemaker for the Bodegas.
Consisting of roughly sixty-five acres in the central area of Ribera del Duero, the area has sandy, limestone soils that produce wines that are fruit forward and powerful. The “JC” is made from grapes harvested from a number of cool climate parcels located in Ribera’s Burgos district.
Rich and earthy, this Tempranillo is a great example of what Ribera wines are all about—the wine carries notes of black fruits, tobacco and chocolate with nuances of vanilla and smoke. The finish is long and enticing, with sweet red fruits packing a punch at the finish line. Pair with robust dishes like lamb and roasted meats. Cellar through 2025, if you can wait that long. It is drinking well now.
Rating: Excellent (90) | $33| 10.0% ABV
