Wine Review: NV Gosset Champagne Brut Excellence

Gosset Brut Excellenceis Champagne that is superior in almost every aspect. The wine is comprised of 36% Chardonnay, 45% Pinot Noir (all from Grand and Premier Cru vineyards) and 19% Pinot Meunier. Gosset has been producing Champagne in Ay, France since 1584 granting them the bragging rights to the moniker of oldest currently operating Champagne producer in the world. They use a couple of unique production methods not utilized by other Champagne producers, especially Grand Marque houses. Most significantly, the wine does not undergo malolactic fermentation. Foregoing the second fermentation and allowing the initial fermentation to be carried out in small oak barrels produces a style with crisp harmonious acidity that sets Gosset apart from other Champagnes.

All riddling and disgorgement are performed by hand, adding to the labor intensive regimen that makes this a sparkling wine of refinement and individuality. All of these steps make Gosset’s signature style impossible to imitate while producing a final product that is powerful, full-bodied yet delicately balanced.

Assertive fruit scented aromas of preserved lemon; overripe pear and yeasty bread are the components in the bouquet offered up to your olfactory senses. Combine that with the deluge of almond lemon, ginger apple cake that cascades across your palate and you have a pretty distinctive and tantalizing experience. The finish is long and yeasty like fresh baked brioche; culminating one of the best bubbly rides available. Got a difficult food pairing? You would be hard pressed to find any food that will not pair well with this wonderful libation. 28,000 case production.
