Its October, and you know what that means! Time to drink some favorite Merlot, while experimenting and finding some new favorites! Tonight, we sampled some awesome Merlot made by an awesome producer, Duckhorn Vineyards. They are a California winery that’s produced Bordeaux varietal wines since the late 1970’s. Their focus on Merlot is true and strong; knowing that Merlot was undervalued and underappreciated, the winery set out to change all that by planting and bottling Merlot as a single variety, rather than allowing it to play second fiddle to Cabernet Sauvignon.
Tonight, we paired the wines with grilled lamb chops with thyme and rosemary. Yum!

The 2017 is rich and opulent, with juicy red fruit flavors that explode in the glass. Its 80% Merlot, but also has a dash of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec to round it out, which makes a great blend. The 2018 Decoy has dark fruit flavors that finish with a good dose of chocolate.
