Colorado Cabernet Franc

Wine Review: 2012 Sutcliffe Christianson Vineyards Cabernet Franc, Palisade, Colorado

This week, I am spotlighting a number of Colorado wines from Sutcliffe Vineyards.  Today, I spotlight a Cabernet Franc. Bottling this variety as a stand-alone or primary varietal has become a bit more popular as of late, and that’s a good thing. If you are looking for a gift for a finicky red wine fanatic whose go-to wine is usually Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or Bordeaux blends, this wine will surprise and satisfy.

Opening aromas are red floral perfumed and pipe tobacco smoke. Flavors are large and surprising for the medium to light body. Juicy, spicy, brambly minerality expressing a consistent note of dried thyme, finishing with well-integrated tannins.

Nothing says, “thinking of you” like buying wine for your friends and loved ones from the winery that made them. So if you have friends or family who are from Colorado or love things from Colorado make sure to order some Sutcliffe wines in time to have them delivered before the holidays. Enjoy!
