Wine Review: 2012 Burgess Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain, California

This wonderfully exquisite classic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is made from 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Petit Verdot and is made from certified Napa Green grapes. Burgess Cellars has been producing Left Bank Bordeaux-style wines for over four decades.

In 1972 Burgess Cellars was created when Tom Burgess, a former USAF pilot bought the original Chateau Souverain vineyard on Howell Mountain from Pillsbury. Tom was fortunate enough to have received his wine education while he was in the USAF and stationed near Sonoma and Napa Valley. Tom went on to further his wine knowledge journey while piloting the IBM corporate jet around Europe. With that background, it is easy to see how he developed the definitive style of wines that Burgess is known to produce.

There is a fresh and friendly opulence to this cabernet that makes it exciting and fun to drink. The aromas of brambly blackberry and savory herbs emanate from the glass, give it a couple of swirls and after twenty minutes of breathing time the party for your taste receptors is about to begin.  The dark berry aromas are present on the palate and accompanied by a good dose of fresh ground, dark roasted coffee with some fresh tobacco and graphite in the tasty mix. Forward but balanced tannins help this wine as it glides to an excellent persistent finish.

Rating: Excellent (92) | $47 | 14.5 % ABV
