Wine Review: MacPhail Pratt Vineyard Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast

Sometimes specific vintages, such as 2011, can bring challenges to vintners on many levels. Enough heat to fully ripen the fruit and harvesting on the rains schedule, not when the fruit is ready, can overwhelm some growers and winemakers. The MacPhail Pratt Vineyard Pinot Noir does not reflect either.

The lower than average alcohol level for this location is the only component that reflects less than ideal conditions. Jim Pratt has weathered (pun intended) several decades of Sonoma Coast weather and his efforts have contributed to raising the bar for quality of all Pinot noir grapes from the Sonoma Coast AVA. After only moments of breathing time this Macphail Pratt Vineyard Pinot noir starts blasting aromas like the Squirrel Nut Zippers blast a tune. This wines tune is in the key of cherry major; very cherry, jam packed cherry.   Wow, you can really smell the cherry along with a mixture of pink and purple floral aromas. The savory herbs and earthy fauna finish out the olfactory array. This juice feels great in the mouth expressing delicate and taught texture in a sensually pleasing manner. Tart cherry, lemon zest, and rich earthy herbs blend together the sweet and savory seamlessly due to the forward acidity. This balanced beauty should be in the arsenal of any clever culinarian who wants to produce perfectly paired cuisine at a luxurious level. 269 case production. Enjoy!
