Wine Review: 2012 Elena Walch Gewurztraminer Kastelaz Alto Adige, Italy

Rarely, do I have the pleasure of getting excited about tasting specific varietals, but every now and then a bottle shows up at our door and I am reminded why I love wine so much. Even rarer, tasting two wines from the same producer made from unique varietals that made me say “Now that’s what I’m talking about.” Elena Walch has done just that.

In a recent interview for the San Jose Mercury News  reporter Jessica Yadegaran asked what wine are you really excited about these days, I proclaimed the Elena Walch 2012 Lagrein had really caught my attention. It was a couple of days later when I opened this Gewurztraminer. Upon opening, I was smacked in the face with a bouquet of fresh white rose petals and then a huge honey and peach aromatic explosion. Overt peachiness, decadent honeypot, dried apricots and spice flavors assault the palate in a most magnificent manner. While the finish lingers it seductively beckons one to take another sip. Spicy

Asian flavors like Hunan and Szechuan specialties will pair well with this wine. It will also drink well as a stand-alone sipper with its generous concentrated complex components. I look forward to frequently tasting the wines from Elena Walch in the future.
