I’m feeling the urge to get away from it all for a relaxing weekend in one of New England’s most idyllic small towns. That’s why I have my sights set on booking a stay at The Federal in downtown Brunswick, Maine.

Nestled along the Androscoggin River, this former federal building-turned-boutique hotel has so much historic charm. It’s the perfect place to sip a cup of coffee in an armchair by the window in your room and gaze at the beauty outside.

Opened in March 2022, The Federal is a 19th century inn that has been elegantly reimagined for a new era. Situated on the storied site of what was formerly The Daniel and Captain Daniel Stone Inn, originally constructed in 1810, The Federal is located in the heart of downtown Brunswick. Halfway between Portland and Boothbay Harbor and just off Route 1, The Federal offers close proximity to Bowdoin College and is the perfect stop for those exploring mid-coast Maine.

Boasting a two-level mezzanine lobby and 30 guest rooms split among two buildings, The Federal features four premium suites within the Federal House, formerly the residence of Captain Daniel Stone. The larger of the two buildings, the East Wing, comprises king and queen-sized rooms. In addition, The Federal offers two meeting rooms, The Anchor, hosting 50, and The Chart Room with a 35-person capacity for corporate and social private events. The Federal is a short walking distance to the shops and cultural attractions of downtown Brunswick and is open year-round. You’ll be in awe of the grand staircase and marble floors as you walk through the door.

What draws me to The Federal is the chance to experience small town life at a leisurely pace. To feel worlds away from the bustle of everyday life yet still surrounded by history, nature and the welcoming charm of coastal Maine is magical. With its prime location in the heart of Brunswick, this one-of-a-kind hotel is the perfect home base for your relaxed getaway.

It’s centrally located to spend your days wandering quaint Brunswick’s brick sidewalks, popping in and out of independent shops, cafes and art galleries. Nearby there are hiking trails along the river and just a short drive away are pristine beaches along the coast.

555 NORTH HOTEL RESTAURANT

At night, don’t miss the hotel’s popular restaurant 555 NORTH, where they serve locally sourced New England fare. They have a wonderful assortment of small and large plates. Some items that stood out are the seared duck breast with glazed carrots and wild berry compote, and the filet with sour cream mashed potatoes with wild mushrooms and smoked onions. The seared tuna and mussels were also divine!
