If it’s one thing I’ve not sampled a lot of, its Georgian wine. And I mean the country of Georgia, not the state! This wine made its way to my doorstep, so I was excited to try it. It’s made of the native Saperavi variety, which is a Teinturier grape that offers up red juice (instead of clear juice, which most grapes produce) so its color is a deep purple color. If you’ve ever tried an Alicante Bouschet, it too, is a Teinturier grape that has massive colors, which stain the side of the glass. Many times, winemakers blend small volumes of Teinturier juice into their blending to boost the color without dramatically impacting the taste.
Saperavi is Georgia’s flagship red, and they often produce acidic wines with lots of character. This one is no exception. The aromas are lively, with red fruit and violet notes. On the palate, its bright and acidic with pungent strawberry, sour cherry and rhubarb notes. It finishes medium-long with soft, grainy tannins.
As for food pairings, this is a great food friendly wine that would match up awesomely with many chicken and beef dishes, but we’re pairing it with a porcini dusted, pan roasted pork tenderloin. Am I making you hungry?
