Sea Shell Cellars in Paso Robles offers up a delicious trio of new releases—a Rhone Ranger, Rose of Grenache and a Tempranillo blend.

2015 Sea Shell Cellars Estate “Collection” Red Blend, Paso Robles, California

Sea Shell Cellars is one of the many Paso Robles wineries flying under the radar and I hope to shine some limelight on the fabulous wines the Carter family is producing down there.  Syrah-Grenache blends are not uncommon, however this one is anything but common. A wine that is seriously more than the sum of its parts and it would be a bargain at $60. Amazingly enough this one can be had for under $20 direct from the winery. This wine aptly named ‘Collection’ is calm and collected, but a little like running down the stairs with scissors. It’s a dangerously delicious easy drinking package of Syrah and Grenache goodness. The aromas are fresh baked cherry pie sitting in a window cooling above freshly bloomed violets. The flavors exhibit components of plum, raspberry, and a nuance sage. On the palate the texture is smooth and sexy, offering an extremely pleasing textural experience that glides to a smooth finish that invites one to pick up the glass and enjoy another sip. A workhorse of a culinary partner, this wine goes with everything except citrus or delicate seafood.

Sea Shell Tempranillo Balboa

2015 Sea Shell Cellars Tempranillo Balboa Reserve, Paso Robles, California

This 2015 Balboa Reserve is 100% Tempranillo and the fruit came solely from the highest point of Sea Shell’s estate Tempranillo block, which represents Paso Robles’ terroir well. This calcareous soil and hill top exposure regularly yields one of the most exciting expressions of the variety.  Dark fruit aromas mingle with nuances of freshly crushed pink peppercorns and anise. Soft on the palate, the essence of cherry jam, mocha and fresh tobacco lead the flavor parade through to the pleasurable finish. Time for some grillin’ and chillin’ because this wine is killin’!

Sea Shell Rose

2017 Sea Shell Cellars Grenache Rose, Estrella District, Paso Robles, California

This rose of Grenache is a stunning wine from the moment you smell the first waft of white peach and nectarine—citrusy key lime zest hovers in the mix too. It’s silky and floral, well integrated and lush. Mineral notes balance the watermelon and tangy strawberry flavors. The refreshing characteristic of this plush elixir kicks the entire experience into a realm very few Rose wines ever reach. Grilled shrimp, artichoke fritters or pork pate will do this juice justice. Enjoy!

On a different note, the Paso Robles Harvest Wine Weekend takes place October 19-21. This is one of the best wine festivals produced anywhere in the world and there is no better way to learn about the region than attending this event produced by the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance. Several major airlines offer flights to San Luis Obispo (30 minute drive to Paso) and San Jose is only a two hour drive away. Enjoy!
