WHAT IS PINOT GRIS (PINOT GRIGIO)?
Pinot gris, otherwise known as Pinot Grigio in Italy, is a white grape considered to be a mutant clone of Pinot noir. It originated in France, but is now found growing in wine regions all over the world.
WHAT DOES IT TASTE LIKE?
Pinot gris tastes very different depending on where it is grown. In Italy, its very neutral and simple. In Alsace, the wines are complex and opulent, spicy, and crisp, with styles that vary from ripe tropical fruit to sweet, botrytis wines. In Oregon, they offer layers of green apple, pear, peach, apricot, and spice. Other notable flavors that come to mind include lemon, lime, mineral, flint, and honey. New World producers offer full bodied wines that sometimes have an oily texture, whereas Old World tend to be crisper and lighter.

WHERE DOES IT GROW?
Pinot gris is found in almost every wine region in the world. Italy grows the most acreage, with the USA and Germany coming in second and third. Other notable locations include Australia, France, and Moldova.
