PureWine reached out to us to test a product that claims to alleviate most common side effects from drinking wine: Headaches, congestion, skin flush, upset stomach and hangovers. Our team really doesn’t suffer from wine side effects, but we’ve written extensively on the wine sulfite topic and we wanted to give the Wave™ and The Wand™ a test run, mainly to see if filtering would change the flavors of the wine.

We used the product on eight different wines and blind tasted with two glasses for each wine: one that was filtered and the other that was not. After collecting the data, we found a consistent pattern.

On one hand, the filtered wines were slightly muted, but overall, the filter seemed to accentuate the high notes of the wine. More noticeably, filtration made the wine softer, removing some of the graininess and tannins, but also removed some of its complexity. Does this matter? Probably not, unless you are a highly sensitive supertaster.
What’s the verdict?
Both The Wave™ ($9.99) and The Wand™ ($9.99 for a 4-pack) are single-use products, so it can get costly using a filter on every wine you drink, but if you are a casual drinker and suffer from headaches, and congestion, you might want to give it a try. Unfortunately, we were not able to validate, through labs, what was removed from the wine, but give it a try. This might be what you’re looking for, especially if you stopped drinking wine because of the repercussions it might cause you. Lett us know if you like the product in the comments.
